If you're a fan of the NBC sitcom Brooklyn Nine-Nine, chances are your favorite character is Captain Raymond Holt's adorable corgi, Cheddar. Which is why it is with a heavy heart that we have to announce that Stewart, the pup who played him in real life, has passed away at the age of 13.
Stewart's owner put up an Instagram post on Monday saying that their "precious boy" had "crossed the rainbow bridge."
While several dogs have played Cheddar in the past, Stewart held the role the longest, and was dearly loved by both fans of the show and the humans who worked with him on set.
"He has a little routine where he does a little 'stick 'em up,' getting arrested and then shot and he plays dead," Michael W. Miliotti, his trainer on set, told EW in 2018. "That's been a little gag where we've used that on several occasions."
Apparently, he was quite the character (no pun intended). "In the episode where Gina and Terry try to boost Captain Holt's social media presence by making Instagram pictures of Cheddar, there is a scene where Holt gives a moving speech filled with gravitas about honor and duty," Dan Goor, an executive producer on the show, said. "Every time he began that monologue, Cheddar, who was just off screen, would let out a soft, unending howl, which cracked up everyone on set. Every time."
While he may be gone, he will certainly never be forgotten. And if you love this very special breed, check out our roundup of 55 Corgi Facts That Reveal Why Corgis Are the Best Pets Ever.
